Simple and fun Valentine’s Day activities to do with young kids

Happy first day of February!!! It feels like the new year just started but here we are in February, which means Valentine’s Day ❤ Probably my favorite holiday after Christmas and the funny thing is my husband and I don’t even do gifts or anything crazy exciting for this day! All the cute heart decorations, pink, chocolate, and a day to show people close to you how much you love them, makes the holiday so special!

If Celebrating holidays is even more fun now that I have two boys to do crafts with, bake special treats, and make decorations together! I wanted to give you a few ideas you could do with your kids either before or on this special little holiday. They are super simple and barely any “prep” work. Pinterest is AMAZINGGGG for providing so many ideas for crafts, activities, and recipes for each holiday, but sometimes it can seem overwhelming. I want to do those special crafts but don’t always have time or the patience to cut out 100 shapes to put the five minutes craft together or go out to the store to buy the items needed.

So, I wanted to put a few ideas together in one place that would make the day SO special for your kids and really take almost no prep at all. Both of the following two activities we did cost barely anything and we already had everything here at home! If you don’t have the supplies, you can find almost everything at your local Dollar Tree for the crafts, especially around the holidays they will have several cute seasonal items! For those who don’t have a Dollar Tree, Walmart will also have all of these items. Kids do not know the difference in whether you spend five minutes or an hour prepping crafts or coming up with things to do, they just want to spend time with you and have fun doing it! ❤

You can pick just one activity or do both a craft and baked treat. Either way, I challenge you to pick just one fun idea to make the holiday special for them while they are little and find the joy in these simple things! Let them have fun, make messes (yes, you will be sweeping up sprinkles for days to come), and make memories for all of you to remember forever!

Valentine’s Day Sugar Cookies

Items needed:

Anyone who knows me, knows I LOVE making everything homemade. It really is fun for me! But, I absolutely CAN. NOT. HANDLE. cut-out cookies and avoid them at all cost. The idea of cut outs are so fun for each holiday, but the amount of work to make dough, spread it all over the counter and cut each shape out sounds like torture to me. SO, to get around this, I make my life easier and buy a Betty Crocker sugar cookie mix. The kids help me make the simple dough, drop those cookies onto the baking sheet and bake. DONE! If you really want heart shapes for Valentine’s Day, you can still use the mix to cut out vs. drop cookies, just follow the directions on the back of the mix because the dough is just a touch different. Either way, your kids are still able to frost and decorate, which is the most fun part anyways!

Valentine’s Day wreath:

Items needed:

  • Paper plate
  • pom-poms
  • foam hearts (these hearts are adhesive, so you wouldn’t even need glue)
  • glue
  • ribbon
  • scissors

Directions

Cut a circle out of the center of the plate, to make it look like a wreath. Poke a hole in the top, to thread a piece of ribbon through so it’s able to hang on a door or wall afterwards! Then let your kids have fun putting whatever items they want on their plate with glue. We just used pom-poms and foam hearts (because that’s what we had laying around), but you could use additional items as well (e.g. sequins, markers, tissue paper shreds, V-Day stickers, construction paper hearts). Use whatever you have lying around the house. Let it dry and it’s done!
